Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega is a changed man. he is no longer the pro-Moscow Marxist firebrand he was in the ’80s. Now he is a peace-loving social democrat.
How do we know this? Because that’s what he told the voters who returned him to power in the last election.
Ortega was speaking to reporters after an official ceremony held by his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport to welcome him.
Today, he said, the countries in the South are in a historical juncture, adding that the grounds are ready for forging unity among these states.
The current situation provides an opportunity to establish new conditions in the world, he stated.
The Nicaraguan president expressed hope that the ongoing order in the world would change and a new order would be established based on economic conditions.
In this global order, ties between nations and governments should be democratized, he said, stressing that imperialism and capitalism should be abolished and a peaceful and friendly world should be created.
