Geert Wilders as Patrick Henry

“I will never be silent. You will not be able to stop me… And that is what we stand for. For freedom and for our beautiful Netherlands.” — Geert Wilders, Dutch MP and leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV).

“Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” – Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775

If you are not familiar with the Gatestone Institute, you are missing out on thought-provoking and intellectual articles written in a way to educate readers on the truth sans the agenda. One such article, titled “The Dutch Death SpiralFrom Paradise to Bolshevik Thought Police” explains that the recent, terrifying conviction of Geert Wilders was “historic” in that for a dissenting opinion about Islam was “criminalized.”

Geert Wilders was convicted of “inciting discrimination and insulting a minority group.” As reported extensively at the Gatestone Institute in 2014, young male Moroccans are responsible for a disproportionate amount of crime.

Author Giulio Meotti writes:

“The historic dimension of Wilders’s conviction is related not only to the terrible injustice done to this MP, but that it was the Netherlands that, for the first time in Europe, criminalized dissenting opinions about Islam.”

Meotti continued to speak of the circumstances surrounding the conviction, and also reminded the reader of several assassinations of Dutch citizens who dared to be outspoken on Islam.

This author was struck by the caliber of readers based on the responses to Meotti’s article. One commenter, Edward Cline, compared Geert Wilders to Patrick Henry, saying in part:

“…[Geert] Wilders can now boast of a badge of honor for having been convicted of ‘hate speech’ ‘not worthy of a politician,’ said the eldest judge of Wilders’s action. This puts him in the same heroic pantheon with Patrick Henry, who was accused of treason by the Speaker of the House of the General Assembly in colonial Virginia when he spoke out against the Stamp Act and the tyranny of the British Crown in 1765. Ten years later in Richmond he exclaimed, ‘Give me liberty or give me death!’ Wilders’s words of defiance against the Dutch kangaroo court, ‘I will never be silent!’ are in that same category of bravery.”

The charges against Wilders were summed up at the Wall Street Journal:

“Mr. Wilders, who is 53 years old, was charged over comments he made during a campaign rally in 2014. At a meeting in a bar in The Hague, he asked supporters if they wanted more or fewer Moroccans in the country. The crowd responded by chanting: ‘Fewer! Fewer! Fewer!’ Mr. Wilders replied: ‘Well, we’ll take care of it then.’

Mr. Wilders later said he was talking only about Moroccans with a criminal record and that his comments reflected the concerns of “millions” of Dutch citizens about the integration of citizens of Moroccan origin.

The court rejected those claims and found him guilty of inciting discrimination. It criticized the ‘inflammatory character’ of Mr. Wilders’s remarks, noting that freedom of speech has its limitations, even for politicians.”

As an aside, members of the Netherlands’ left-wing Labour Party have made arguably worse comments about Moroccans but have not faced scrutiny:

  • “We also have s*** Moroccans over here.” Rob Oudkerk, Dutch Labour Party (PvDA) politician.
  • “We must humiliate Moroccans.” Hans Spekman, PvDA politician.
  • “Moroccans have the ethnic monopoly on trouble-making.” Diederik Samsom, PvDA politician.

Asked about those comments made by Wilder’s peers before his conviction, he replied: “If lady justice is truly blind, she will prosecute all of us or none of us. I hope none of us.”

“Give me liberty or give me death.” – Patrick Henry
