So sayeth Gen. Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The battlefield has morphed into something akin to herding terrorist cats, with about as much risk of a catastrophic oopsie moment. Our military leaders are beginning to see that one of the myriad uses of the Internet is to launch a vast array of terrorist attacks. With a keyboard and a connection, anyone can reach out and wreak havoc all over the globe. Since the Internet was originally invented for the military, you would have thought that they would have considered this eventuality. But not so much:
“Information technology is the stone in the sling,” wrote Richard Lourie of the Moscow Times, “the cheap weapon that can bring down a Goliath.”
Indeed, the top dog in the U.S. military, Gen. Martin Dempsey — known above all as a very keen and sober strategist — has acknowledged that no longer can war be effectively waged away from American shores.
Breaking Defense reporter Sydney Freedberg posted the quote:
“The homeland is no longer a sanctuary,” Gen. Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said. “Some strategic seminars we ran about a year ago [showed that] if we’re engaged in a conflict virtually anywhere in the globe there is likely to be some effect in the homeland, whether it’s potentially ballistic missiles or cyber.”
It seems as though instead of pulling back to protect America at an increased time of threat, we are splattering ourselves even more across the planet. Too many fingers in too many pies. Too many enemies in too many venues. Our enemies know we are weak and spread too thin as well. We are trying to cover our bases with China, Russia, Iran and North Korea and their global terrorist sycophants are ready and willing to do their evil bidding. Thank you Progressives. You have basically neutered the US, the last real protector of true freedom on the planet.
The Pentagon is looking to downsize by 20%, while expanding their cyber warfare teams. They fear an imminent attack from the Internet, but they should also fear an EMP. Iran is now getting ready to conduct another ballistic missile launch. Originally, Obama said that would be a deal breaker on negotiations with them… but it seems he was only joshing. Fire away! We’ll just chase some other political squirrel here in the US, while the radical Islamists get ready to nuke Israel and the US. Ain’t no explosives here, no sir.
With logic that I can’t begin to wrap my head around, the military didn’t seem to think countries like Iran and North Korea were a cyber threat till now. All of the sudden, a professor or two says, “Hey! What if they got the ability to do that?” Well, duh. What do you think the Axis of Evil has been diligently working on for years? Their golf swing?
Meanwhile, while we play ‘what if,’ America is indeed no longer a sanctuary. We are not protected by oceans any more. Cyber attacks are a click away from anywhere on the planet, EPMs can be launched at us and not show up on radar (because we aren’t looking by the way). We’ve allowed terrorists over our borders with G-d knows what and what does our fearless, Marxist leader do? He takes a selfie at a terrorist Communist’s funeral, shakes hands with Raul Castro, hugs dictators and flirts with the Danish Prime Minister. That pretty much says it all.
