The KLUB

I finally met the other member of world’s most exclusive KLUB (Kaiapoi Libertarian Union of Bloggers) last, Rick Giles-of Silent Running fame at an ACT Party gathering the other night.

Like me, Rick hales from the North Canterbury river town of Kaiapoi-about 20 Kms north of Christchurch.

Rick became a libertarian by listening to Objectivist, Lindsay Perigo on the radio while working on his parents farm.

I got on the right track after reading a newspaper article on Ayn Rand by NZ’s numero uno Objectivist Bill Weddell, when I was 18.

Bill Weddell converted Lindsay from socialism to libertarianism a few years later.

There’s a connection there that only libertarian Kaiapovians can possibly hope to fathom.

Rick has just spent the last month in a Michigan slammer after running foul of US border officials.

Rick overstayed his visa by six days and when attempting to cross into Canada was hauled away for a months R&R on the US taxpayer.

Held almost incommunicado, with no access to a lawyer Rick’s faith in the land of the free was a little shaken.

Like me, Rick still loves what the USA represents, but wishes it could re-discover the ideals that made America the greatest country on earth.

  1. as an occasional visitor to the USA over recent years I can attest that border control, particularly since the advent of Dept.of homeland security,is now often a vile experience.Measures such as compulsory fingerprinting of even transit passengers are commonplace.I’ve witnessed a 70 something English woman, utterly bewildered and frightened, being referred to loudly in public as “suspect”and ordered to “raise your hands” I’m not an anti-american in any way,but as you observe,Trev, they’ve slipped a long way from the ideals of “the land of the free”.

  2. In some ways Dave. I don’t normally dete such comments (unless they defame other people), because it proves that I’m touching a few nerves and am therefore on the right track.

    So keep commenting lefties!

  3. Trevor, it must be disappointing for you to write an intelligent blog only to have idiots like the above commenter deface it with their illiterate incomprehensible drivel.

Well reasoned disagreement is one thing and makes for a good discussion but some of the graffiti here hardly adds to the sum of knowledge except to admirably point up the downside of not having a good education system.

  4. Yes, after Bush and Key, your name was on that list
They were planning to attack your annus with a maori spear
(you’re sorry they got caught now, ey?)_
