A Duck Call Against Censorship

Seems I’m always late to the fun… I was not watching Duck Dynasty because it sounded like another reality show to me. Boy, was I wrong. I finally decided to watch after catching one of my favorite shows with Tim Allen, Last Man Standing. I adore Allen, so when he had the guys on his show and there was dinner and a prayer at the end of the episode, I was smitten. Plus, the humor is right up my alley. I started watching and like the rest of America, I’m hooked. Rednecks, duck calls, cooking squirrels and blowing up beavers – what’s not to love? Oh, and family values, God, patriotism and guns – you boys are welcome in our home any time. No wonder it has blown out all historic ratings. Ducks rule.

Turns out A&E was a very naughty media outlet and got called on it (they have since knocked it off):

Phil Robertson, the leader of the “Duck Dynasty” clan, confronted producers of the hit A&E reality series over questionable bleeps suggesting profanity that was never spoken, as well as cutting any mention of Jesus.

Robertson revealed the clash during an April interview with Christian sports magazine, Sports Spectrum, which has only just begun to go viral on the web.

“They inserted fake bleeps, like someone had used profanity, but no one had used profanity,” Robertson, the founder of Duck Commander, said. “So I asked those guys that produce the show. I said, ‘What’s the point of the fake bleeps?”

“They inserted fake bleeps, like someone had used profanity, but no one had used profanity,” Robertson, the founder of Duck Commander, said. “So I asked those guys that produce the show. I said, ‘What’s the point of the fake bleeps?”

The editing trick, as Robertson explains, was used because the Los Angeles-based editors “probably thought that there was some profanity going on.” But there was, in fact, “zero,” which led Robertson to pressure producers to stop the practice.

“If you want that, oh, you can get all of that you want. Just turn the station. There’s plenty of that. If we’re not using profanity, why make it look like we’re using profanity? What is the point?” Robertson continued. “Why don’t you just run it, and say what we say. They’re like, ‘You got a point.’ So they quit doing that.”

Another issue Robertson had with the content featured in the episodes making it to air? Not enough Jesus.

“The other thing was when we prayed, we said, ‘In Jesus name, amen’ they would just have me say, ‘And thank you, Lord, for the food, thank you for loving us, amen.”‘ Robertson added. “So I said, ‘why would you cut out in Jesus’ name?”

According to Robertson’s paraphrased conversation with producers, it was because editors “don’t want to offend some of the Muslims, or something.”

Robertson isn’t worried about offending anyone by saying Jesus on national television, because our calendar year, 2013, is labeledAnno Domini (A.D.), which is translated from Medieval Latin as”in the year of Our Lord.”

“I said, ‘You Hollywood cats are counting time by Jesus just like I am.’ I would think that out of all of the people that walk planet Earth, if we’ve all decided in America to count time by just one of them, Jesus of Galilee, I don’t think it hurts to throw his name in there from time to time,” Robertson said. “So I noticed now, every once in a while, they’re leaving it in there.”

So the channel was using censorship to prevent offending Muslims. Instead, they managed to offend the Christian majority and I would guess, got an earful. Robert Spencer gets it right again:

Because everyone knows what happens when some Muslims get offended. So this is yet another reinforcement of the idea that terrorism works, and jihadist intimidation and thuggery work: cowards start falling into line even without any explicit threat.

Duck Dynasty rocks! That family has more courage and principles than I have seen in a long, long time. They got wealthy the American way and have not lost their bearings. They love their families, God and their freedom. No elitists here – only a duck call against censorship.

  2. Dear Robertson Family. I have been disabled since February 14 1989. God has blessed me and I am one of Gods miracles.I broke my Back and caused nerve damage and messed up 4 disc.My T-12 vertabre was split and crushed. But because of Gods great mercy I am alive and I can walk. It was a blessing because I got to raise my children. My wife and mother of our children had left us and I did my best to raise them in the Lord. I have one son and daughter in law and a grand daughter who are missionaries in Arequipa,Peru,South America. I am sad to say my daughter and son have gotten away from the Lord. Well I want to tell you that I enjoy your show. It is refreshing. If ever we need shows that have biblical meaning it is now. I told you these things not to feel sorry for me but that you know God is still working. My heart is broken with what is happening to our country. Jesus needs to be up lifted. If we will only humble ourselves and pray. Thank you and please keep the show going. Your brothers and sisters in the Lord. I love you all. Please pray for Todd Marks my son that his work keeps going as God would want. Thank you for reading this if you do.
