Jane Kelsey on Philippines Government "Blacklist"

On a recent edition of Waatea News, Auckland University legal academic Jane Kelsey revealed that she was on a Philippines government blacklist along with several other New Zealanders.

The secret list, in use in 2007, allegedly named 504 people the Philippines government claimed had Taliban or Al Qaeda “links.

According to Pinoypress

Human Rights Watch has obtained a copy of a Philippines government blacklist banning 504 people from entering the country in July and August with, according to the document, “Al-Qaeda/Taliban Link.” The Bureau of Immigration of the Philippines Justice Department blacklist includes individuals from more than 50 countries, including expatriate Filipinos.

The blacklist includes individuals from US-based organizations such as Church World Service, the Methodist Church General Board of Church and Society, the National Lawyers Guild, and the Center for Constitutional Rights. It also includes individuals working for the International Labor Solidarity Mission, and from Philippine unions and civil society organizations such as Bayan and Gabriela/Gabnet.

The blacklist went into effect on July 24 and was apparently lifted on August 10. According to a Philippines foreign ministry official, the list was put in place at the time of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ministerial meeting held in Manila from July 21 to August 2. Since the government did not publicly announce the blacklist, it is not clear whether this or any other blacklist is in effect at present.

It would be interesting to find out if the list did indeed accuse all 504 people named as having Al Qaeda/Taliban links.

That seems unlikely.

More probable is that only some named were accused of Al Qaeda/Taliban ties but the number was exaggerated to discredit the list.

Ms Kelsey has supported New Zealand’s own home grown accused “terrorists“-the “Urewera 17“-affectionately known as “Te Qaeda.”

She is a patron of the defence fund for those arrested in the October 2007 “anti-terror” raids.

Other patrons of the fund are John Minto, Simon Oosterman and Mike Treen.

  1. The post from the supposed member of ACT is pure agitprop, and pretty amateurish at that!

As for its reference to Kelsey – fighting for BOTH socialism an freedom is like trying to square a circle. The two are incompatible.

  2. Our pro-Urewera “ACT member” has a point about the law and the Urewera losers.

The law was poorly framed, and this has stopped the rag-bag of activists facing the charges they deserve to face.

It makes you laugh to hear their friends prattling on about democracy and law and fair trial when these nutters with AK47s, sawn off shotguns an pistols clearly didn’t give a fig for democracy.

  3. Trevor:

Don’t be fooled. If this guy/woman above was a bona fide member of ACT rather than a trickster or a spy I’m sure he/she would be keen to let you know under his/her own name.

The whole post looks just like red propaganda to me.

Kelsey great? More like a Marxist
    dinosaur I would say.

  4. Anonymous ACT member-I don’t at all what you say about Jane Kelsey’s academic ability, or personal qualities.

I am concerned about her political activities, which I believe are highly damaging.

Ms Kelsey dedicates her life to demonising freedom and populaising socialist ideas.

That is simply not kosher and she should be called on it.

I’m intrigued by your certainty that the “Urewera 17” were not terrorists.

If they weren’t “terrorist” what the hell were they doing up in those hills with illegal weapons?

I have yet to hear (despite explicitly requesting)any convincing innocent explanation.

What do you know that I don’t?

  5. Anonymous-“Kelsey hasn’t hurt a flea”-Jane Kelsey has never physically harmed anyone, but I would not say the same for her ideas.

Her anti free trade ideas are extremely harmful to the third world poor she claims to champion.

Bad ideas can be hugely destructive.

  6. I am an Act member and was taught by Kelsey. I was an Act member then too, and an ‘Act’ivist.

Jane knew this but treated me with much respect and was always polite, helpful and a great teacher. I had some great discussion with her about trade liberalisation and market economics.

She is a great, yes great, academic and I am a big fan of hers despite her political leanings. The Urewera mob are not terrorists and if you are truly concerned about human rights and the rule of law Trevor you would be as concerned as I am about the way the Urewera suspects have been treated. It is shameful.

BTW, I am still a member of Act.

  7. “Judge people on what they are doing rather than their political ideology”

That would mean judging Stalin as a good guy because he finally fought the Nazis, and at the same time ignoring Stalin’s massacre of millions of Russians.

The Lefties aren’t fighting for democracy in the Philippines. They’re fighting to weaken the Government so they can take over.

  8. I am actually kinda stunned that you are defending the phillipine government. The people I know that have been to the phillipines have been trying to draw attention to extra judicial killings and have been promoting democracy not socialism.

You should start judging people on what they are doing rather than their political ideology.

  9. I didn’t see anything in Trevor’s item about Kelsey supporting Al Qaeda. He said Te Qaeda, which is a joke!

The Lefties supported the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, not the Islamicists. They changed sides only when America and the West took on the Taleban.

  10. A communist Philippines would be far, far worse than the present regime with all its faults.

    Think Cambodia, North Korea, Belarus.

  11. George-Jane kelsey is promoting socialism.

The Philippines government is not perfect, but is better than anything the CPP or the Moro rebels could provide.

As many of the political murders in the Pines are leftists killing leftists, Jane Kelsey might be safer out of it.

  12. She is active in promoting democracy in a country whose government would rather not change – to the point where hundreds of political murders against opponents have occurred in recent years. They can’t murder her, but they can ban her.
