Australia’s SEARCH Foundation – the continuation of the former Communist Party of Australia, is hosting a nationwide tour by prominent American Marxist Bhaskar Sunkara in late May.
Sunkara’s tour is being funded by a bequest from late SEARCH Foundation and Communist Party leader Eric Aarons.
In recent years the SEARCH Foundation has built deep ties to this country’s largest Marxist revolutionary organization Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The two groups are united by a common Marxist heritage and the desire to help each other build “socialism” in their respective countries.
According to the SEARCH Foundation.
“Bhaskar is an American political writer. He is the founding editor of Jacobin, the president of The Nation, and publisher of Catalyst: A Journal of Theory and Strategy. He is a former vice-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America and the author of The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality, as well as a columnist for The Guardian US.
Bhaskar’s tour will cover the situation in Trump’s America, the response of left and progressive movements to Trump’s authoritarian policies, including his attacks on public education.“
DSA now has over 100,000 members, while SEARCH hovers at about 750. Despite their tiny numbers, SEARCH is proportionately more powerful.
SEARCH controls the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the left wing of the ruling Australian Labor Party. It also has deep ties to several Australian Greens leaders including South Australian based federal Senator Barbara Pocock and with multiple peace, environment, Aboriginal and social movement leaders.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has a long history with the Communist Party/SEARCH Foundation which explains his fondness for communist China and his reluctance to engage with the United States.
Albanese’s chief of staff Tim Gartrell, one of Australia’s most influential figures, is also a SEARCH Foundation comrade.
