Three New Urewera Arrestees Named

From the Radio New Zealand News website

Three men have appeared in court in Tauranga and Whakatane as part of the police investigation into alleged firearms offences in the Bay of Plenty.

One of the men, (name now suppressed), 24, of Ruatoki, was granted bail by a judge in Whakatane on Tuesday and has had his case transferred to Auckland.

Raunatiri Hunt, 44, and Tekaumarua Wharepouri, 46, both of Maketu in the Western Bay of Plenty, are to reappear before a judge in Tauranga District Court next week.

The judge in Tauranga ruled that the pair needed time to arrange legal aid to avoid delaying the combined pre-depositions hearing planned for all 19 defendants in Auckland.

Nine joint charges were laid against the trio relating to weapons including an AK47 semi-automatic rifle, various other rifles with telescopic sights and a sawn-off, double-barrel shotgun.

  1. “If one posts a name before the suppression order comes into effect, is one still obligated to remove it?”

Yes. I believe (although not positive) this came up recently in a case where the NZ Herald had to remove an article from their online archives…

And, in a more related note, why the NZ Herald website had to remove Omar Hamed’s name on the afternoon of October 15th (they had it up in the morning, but then he appeared in court and got name supression).

As for why some news orgs are reporting it, I don’t know, but stuff.co.nz and others are reporting the supression.

  2. Asher if the man has name suppression as you say, why is his name still up on RNZ website and others.

If one posts a name before the suppression order comes into effect, is one still obligated to remove it?

  3. Anon says

“we have you now Trev you in our hands!!”

Only one thing in your hands anon-in one of them anyway.

  4. This is nothing to do with activism, it’s just some people who (according to the police) illegally possess guns. Why Indymedia nuts or Trevor Loudon think it’s a big deal is beyond me.

  5. These idiots shouting court orders are only concerned for the law when it suits them.

Next they will be arriving in court with AK47s and sawn-off shotguns. To hell with them!

  6. “The Ruatoki arrestee has name supression”

Wowee seeing that the name is still there, Trevor breaks yet another court suppression order. What a gutsy lawbreaker.

“Are the charges for illegal weapons of for unlawful possession of weapons.”

None are being charged with illegal weapons, they are all about the intent of the possession. You can be fully licensed and be charged with that.

  7. An AK47 and a sawn-off shotgun among the charges and Indymedia shouts “repression”.

It’s amazing when people criticise only non-totalitarian blogs over this case. It’s okay to shout “repression” but not okay to remind us of the dangers of such weapons in a democratic society.

    Soldier on Trevor!
