The Philippines revolution comes to Auckland next Monday night.
Global Peace and Justice Auckland is running a forum at the Trades Hall, in Great North Rd, with Dennis Maga, spokesperson for the Philippine “Free Ka Bel Movement”.
Ka Bel is the nickname of Crispin Beltran, a former labour movement leader and Philippine Senator, currently in jail on “sedition” and “rebellion” charges.
The charges relate to an alleged coup attempt organised by dissident army officers and the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Beltran is former leader of the Kilosang Mayo Uno, the Communist Party aligned trade union federation. In 2001 he was also co-founder of the International League of Peoples Struggles, a federation of Maoist parties and organisations led by Communist party of the Philippines chairman, Jose Maria Sison.
Maga is a former student leader and one of the Philippines most prominent “legal” leftist activists. Currently he is Secretary-General of ANGLO-KMU (General Workers’ Federation). Maga has also been the spokesperson of the Gloria Step Down Movement, which campaigns against Philippines president Gloria Arroyo.
Don’t shake hands with him though student. You’ll never be able to wash it again-grovelling collaborator.
Sounds like it will be an awesome meeting. Have to make it along.
