A Texan’s Answer to Welfare

Reportedly from the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco, Texas, Nov 18, 2010.

Put me in charge

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’ll get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese, and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke, or get tattoos and piercings, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above are voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we taxpayers are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

And finally, while you are on Government subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will lose your voting privileges while you are receiving a Government welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job!”

Right on!

Thanks to Jim

  1. I too agree that the welfare system is out of whack…however…dont group us all into the “idiots” and “lazy” category…
I am a single mom of four…mind you, had them all when I was married, then dear hubby decided to jump ship into another boat and left me with the four kids when our youngest was five months old. (whom I later found out has autism) I have had to rely on welfare, food stamps, medical for the kids and sec 8 in order to survive. and yes, I have worked, even night shifts…ever try to deal with daycare for four? How about daycare for a child with autism? If you did, you would know it’s next to impossible, that’s why I became a school bus driver and at 4 am every day I dragged myself and my two youngest onto the bus to work. I am now currently in school to get my bach degree in Dental hygiene, but until I get that degree I still need welfare. I dont like it, but here’s the worst. When my youngest turns 11, by state law, I have to get a 20 hour week job in order to keep benefits, but if I quit school, and dont look for a job, I can still get everything and not have to work a bit. I am studing so hard to get myself and family out of welfare, dont put me into the lazy category….see if you can pull off a 4 point GPA in Anatomy and Physiology and Stats and a full time schedule plus keep a house, plus goto every meeting with doctors, therapists, county workers, OT and behavior specialists and such! But when my youngest turns 11, I will be in my program..a 8-5, monday through friday program for a Bach’s degree…but I cant do a 20 hour job on top of everything I am already doing! I am only one human being! Talked to a DHS worker about this and she told me to quit my school and dont get a job if I wanted to keep the benefits I need to help my family!…..and oh, by the way…kid’s daddy isnt paying child support again….and dont tell me to contact govt about it…all they do is give me run arounds and make me feel like I am crap, when I am trying my best to do things right. Like I said, the welfare system is yes, out of whack, full of dishonest people on both sides. But what about the rest of us who no fault of our own ended up here? Dont group us all into the same as those who dont care and feel it’s an entitlement….

  2. I’m all for your system as soon as this government returns to me the 50 years of taxes I was forced to pay into this pyramid scam at the point of a gun and returns to me the years spent in the jungles of southeast asia because under your system, none of you are entitled to protection from our enemy’s unless your in the military; after all why should I waste my life trying to protect you? Great system, hooray for me and the hell with you, I like it, I hope you don’t ever need any help because you ain’t gonna get any.

    1. BTW my husband and I both served in the military, as did both our fathers and both my brothers, so we have put our own “skin in the game.” We still don’t expect the government to care for us or ours. Nor do we want it to. I don’t say “hooray for me and to hell with you.” I say “Hooray for the greatest country in history!” I served because I believe in what America stood for and can again. Nobody owes me anything for that. But here it is: Life ain’t fair. Nobody can make it fair. Bad things happen. Some people get the breaks and some people have to scratch for everything they have. But that doesn’t change the fact that you have a right in America to pursue happiness but not to have someone else buy the gas. And I do agree if you want me to pay the bill than I should have some say so in how the charges are racked up. My 19 year old son doesn’t like some of the house rules and I tell him “you are of age, move out and make your own way.” That is his right but if I am paying the bills I have the right to decide what the house rules are. I really don’t see what the difference is.

  3. Right On….. Now we need to say… Men need to stop have babies too! Get fixed if you want to have lots of sex……….. Love Texas

  4. I feel the same way about those that are taking advantage of the system, but… there are good, honest people who need help sometimes. Like my family.
My husband lost his job and for 11 months worked as a self-employed handyman while he searched for a new job. We went from making $4,000 a month, to barely $1000.

We are losing our house. We have four children and one on the way, and even if he was working in his field of choice, we would have no insurance because it is not provided. I am on medicaid. We are on food stamps. I have to feed my children, and I have to keep them warm and safe. And I DO pay taxes myself and have for many years. So when I need help then I believe it is perfectly acceptable to seek the help that is available.
Not all people receiving assistance from the government “made a mistake”, but rather ended up without a job due to the economy and company cutbacks. Not everyone who does not have a job is someone that is NOT looking for a job. After 11 months, my husband has found a job, but it took 11 months and he is still not making enough to pay all our bills.

Many people are out there, looking, hoping, praying, and suffering.

A little compassion for their circumstances please. It’s a horrible feeling when you have children and are losing everything and it’s completely out of your control. And it does not qualify me for a tubal ligation, or the awful circumstances of feeding my children nothing but beans and rice when other foods are perfectly acceptable as well. We don’t buy steak, I clip coupons, and fix frugal meals. I don’t receive enough food stamps to have steak. Your blanket statements do not apply to everyone in the programs. Reform is needed, I agree, for those that are abusing the system. But not all are abusing it.

    1. I understand, and I sympathize with your unfortunate situation; unfortunately, we have a bunch of idiots who will eventually find out the hard way that the Hooray for me, and the Hell with the rest of you attitude doesn’t work. What goes around, comes around and when you people find yourselves out of luck and down and out or disabled or unable to get medical attention because you can’t afford insurance because of a pre-existing medical condition;well, after you stop crying and feeling sorry for yourselves, you can think back and reflect about what a tough hard ass you were!
I ain’t no liberal; however, I am compassionate and believe that when people are down and out and it’s not to their own choosing and they have paid their dues into this system then they are entitled to some help to get them back on their feet. Now, people who make a lifelong career out of abusing the system is another story altogether. One size doesn’t fit all.

      1. You assume that because we are against the welfare state we are unfeeling toward our fellow man. They are not one and the same. My husband and I contribute to charities directly and through our church. We offer our expertise and manhours free of charge to worthy causes in our community. That is our choice. For the someone else to reach into our pocket and take our money to keep or give to someone else is theft. That doesn’t change just because a government acronym is attached to the hand in my pocket. I do feel for people who are in situations not of their choosing. I respect a mother working the job she can and going to school to try to change her and her families situation and I would personally assist that person any way that I could but it should still be my choice. We have supported my disabled brother and assisted our elderly parents (and put shoes from Wal-Mart and hand me down clothing on our children and ate a fair amount of rice and beans to be able to do so.) That is our responsibilty.

  5. I have one issue with your plan.
” women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. ”

What about the “baby’s daddy”??? Why just target the women? There are plenty of dead beat dads out there too that need a snip-snip.

    1. Very true. You also notice that he didn’t mention Men……… But I do agree with the rest. It’s time to stop being an enabler……..
      Go Texas

  6. I lived in New Orleans for many years, and witnessed the tragedy of families that are 3rd generation welfare recipients. It has become a way of life for so many of them. There is no pride in work or self support. They are content to breed like rabbits with no thought as to who will foot the bill. I believe everyone is entitled to one mistake, when you give birth to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th,……. child you know where the come from. I don’t feel that I should have to support, clothe, feed or provide medical care for those children. They are not providing any support for my child why should I for thiers?

I agree, able bodied recipients of entitlement programs should be required to have some sort of job. I don’t care if it is digging holes and then filling the back up. Child care would be provided for all the children, but no additional monies for more than 2 children. Drug testing should be mandatory for the adults and attendance in school mandatory for the children including education that would make them productive members of society and no longer freeloaders.

  7. Excellent perspective. In a “free” society in a State of Nature”, as this country started, the individual was totally responsible for himself. He was the King of his own castle. The government in this country was not designed to “provide” for individuals as did the King, it was there to protect rights.

We have volunteered into a “State of Society” seeking government granted “benefits”, which are privileges. By doing so, we have tacitly accepted “Society’s” rules as contingent upon being eligible for these grants of largesse. In “Society”, we are not “free” people. We have become government’s “subjects”.

There is a clause in the Constitution that liberals use to circumvent the Constitution called the “Spending Clause”. By accepting the privilege of being given unearned money from government (other people’s money), we “accept” any conditions government places upon this “benefit”. This is a voluntary surrender of our rights, we exchanged them for privileges.

When “welfare” began in this country, it was called “Relief”, people in need worked for the County doing manual labor like cutting brush, digging ditches, etc. to “earn” their stipends. “They could not just sit home drinking beer and watching football on TV.” The CCC camps operated in the same manner. They were provided with basic survival essentials until they got back on their feet again, not luxury items.

When the common-law of liberty still operated in this country, charity for those in need started with family, supplemented by communities, organized by the churches. Government in a “free” society does not “provide”, as involuntary contributions are a violation of “property rights”. Charity in local communities are self-policing. Everyone knows who is really needy and who is faking it.

My suggestion for our present “State of Society” is that the money the super-super-super rich have insulated from taxation in Tax Free Foundations should be applied to fund the welfare state they advocate. Abolish all Tax Free Foundations that use their tax-free money to promote Marxism.

And, last but not least, someone who is the recipient of public largesse should not be allowed to vote until they become self sufficient again. This is precisely what destroyed every previous democracy. Soon the parasites outnumber the producer and the whole system collapses. In the early years of this country, only property owners could vote in the disposition of property. This is the only way to protect and preserve “property” and prohibit “redistribution of wealth” (stealing) which is not lawful until all property rights have been abolished.

Good article. It likely will offend liberals as it makes sense.

    1. WOW FRANK !!
Amen Amen. No offense from here. Of course I am no lib. But I totally agree with the funds of ultra wealth supporting their own welfare states. Send this thought on over to the White House, k?

  8. Gary if they want meat, babies house, ect.. Get a job!!! My husband worke 2 jobs when we had twins, no goverment help for us we had jobs and where married!!! And I work!! drive a 10 yr. old van no nice rims!! They do not have to agree with anything get a job or 2!!!! I love working a 9 hr day stopping to get milk and paying w/ my money while the woman with bling and fake nails and her kids whip the card!!!!

  9. From the time my 3 children were born, they have ‘seen’ their parents work. Therefore they believe us when we say that grown-ups have jobs and take care of themselves. I have also told them all their lives that nothing is free. NOTHING. If you are on welfare, you are selling yourself short. If you are on welfare, you are selling yourself–Period. Anybody able to work—should be at work.

I feel America has generations of families who have ‘seen’ their parents milk the government. It IS time to stop the distruction of esteem. Pride is shown not lectured about.

  10. I hope you read this over and realize that this is more totalitarian than Stalin, and expresses outright Stalinistic communism.

Billionaire elites have taken over $14 Trillion from the Fed to prop up the funds that showered them with hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses and dividend, and you’re worried because one of their victims buys some meat with a food card?

    Mandatory medical testing.
    Mandatory dietary controls.
Government-imposed testing of body and mind.
A “home” in a barracks subject to constant govt inspection and surveillance.
    Abolition of all political rights.
    A national electronic “gulag” system.

And you guys call yourselves ANTI-COMMUNISTS? LOL

    1. Hey Gary, it’s not communism or Stalinism if you voluntarily accept the government’s proposal. Why is this so hard for the liberal minded to understand?

  11. Perfect… I feel the exact same way!! We work hard and struggle to pay our Taxes! I see so many with their EBT cards… Cone in with 3 or 4 kids… Shop and walk out to their Escalade and then the adults all light up their cig’s… If you can afford cig’s, you can afford to feed you’re own kids! I agree.. They either show a paycheck stub or report to local govt and put in an 8 hr day! Provide Day care and put the moms and dads to work.. And these women who say father unknown ( protecting baby daddy)… They can do double shifts! I agree with Nor Plant and NO voting rights… It is a conflict of intrest! It is a choice and if yhey want uo vote then get off welfare… And no getting off the month before elections!!! A 2 yr period.. Of No asst before voting privledges!!! We should go before congress… Lobby for this to become law!

  12. You “like” AZ Sheriff Joe… right?! I’ve sent your article Alllll over. Thanks!

  13. The trouble with our current system, is that the foxes are in charge of the hen houses and it all began in 1965 under the Johnson administration.

  14. My family and I were just talking about all of this at dinner and this guy puts it perfectly except the voting thing. I get frustrated sometimes and feel that some shouldnt vote but I have to say that simply because some people living their life through welfare are trash shouldnt have a say you cant penalize all. And to William I think most Americans accept that there are certain people who just cant work and are willing to accept the need to help these people, we just need better oversite of the system to help those who are really in need of help and keep those who are scamming it off the roles

    1. Thank you, I wish I could work at this time, I still am looking to find something I can do reliably and consistantly for usage to support myself.

Sometimes I still would love to get my hands on the cropduster who hit the wrong field and inflicted this on me.

Thank you each for the answers it helps me out.

      1. Have you considered something that you can do sitting down–like painting–organizing beads screws, bolts–scrap booking–many people pay well to have their photographs place in albums. Maybe you could learn to crochet, or do other handicraft type things and send them to craft shows. If you are good with you computer maybe you could learn to program or do advertising for social media. So many things that short-of -breath will not effect too much.

    2. I like the voting thing because there IS a conflict of interest. Think about it and you will understand.

It shouldn’t apply to the disabled, but those who want to stay on the welfare rolls should not get to vote.

  15. Wonderfull; yet a question, what of those people such as with any disability that cannot do any work due to injuries or such? While there are not many, there are some who fall into that category.

And yes, I am one of them, my lungs and nervous system are all but shot due to being caught under a crop duster while working on my grandpa’s farm and business. I have repeatedly attmepted to work, and now am all but restricted to only a few minutes of activity at any one time due to pain and chronic shortage of breath.

I want to work again, and get back to being something again, and do what odd jobs I am actually able to do…which right now is not a lot.

So what am I suppose to do?

    Honest answers please.

    1. I think Dennis Miller said it best – “we don’t mind helping out those truly in need; however, most of us are resentful of having to subsidize the clueless.”

I would also point out that this country worked much better when families and instruments of faith (i.e. churches)were the charity giving institutions in this country versus the government. I

    2. William,

If you are truly that bad off, and these reforms were implemented, Charities could easily handle helping you without forcing anyone to pay your way.

Do you want others to be forced by the government to care for you? What makes you feel entitled to anyone elses wealth?

Honest answers please, not meaning to demean you in any way.

      Thanks in advance.

      1. No I do not feel entitled to anyone else’s wealth, they have earned it and should keep it. I do agree the charities are able to aid folks in my position. I mostly wanted to see what others thought in my situation.

Right now, I would love to be working at anything I can.

        Thank you for answering.

        1. You were injured while working, which shows that you would prefer to be a productive person.

There are programs that help the disabled and it sounds like you should qualify.

Most of us resent seeing Food Stamps being used to buy tobacco, beer, wine and party supplies. If you rolled up to the checkout in your wheelchair, I’d probably offer to help you get your things on the conveyor belt.

          I wish you well

    3. I see you can type and your command of English is acceptable – open a business typing business letters and correspondence, become a “remote secretary,” medical transcription pays fairly well, teach yourself web design, search engine optimization. Learn copywriting. Get in touch with folks like Goodwill Industries, these organizations can often hook you up with jobs that can be done by those confined to wheelchairs or with other disabling conditions. There are plenty of productive things you can do that require very little physical activity.

    4. @William (cat folk artist).. I don’t believe the author was thinking of folks like you Bill when he came up with this. You know who he was referring to.

As for what you can do.. I guess it just depends on several factors, (age, health, skills) But there are things you can do to make a living if you want to. A riding lawnmower is not a very physically demanding piece of machinery to operate. So maybe a little yardwork business on the side?

There are lots of opportunities for at home work, if we just really want to. That’s the point of this topic.. Getting people the incentive to work when they do not have to.

      Good luck!

    5. You are not seeking to make a living off our government and I don’t think you are included in this author’s thoughts. He’s talking of those who simply live free while refusing to work. You are who we SHOULD BE helping and taking care of – not those who only take, take, take…without doing anything useful for society. God bless you and keep you. I will lift you in my prayers today.
