Socialists, Samba, Snow Fight, Smash Car to Save Planet

Socialist Worker front group, Climaction blocked off Auckland’s Karangahape Road yesterday for a protest/street party highlighting climate change

From Indymedia

Around 200 people participated in snow fights, stalls and a people’s assembly with many onlookers interested. Bands played samba and world style music along with a punk band, and people danced across a street normally filled with cars.

A people’s assembly and speakers spoke about the disastrous effects of climate change if we do not act now. The participants voted for free and frequent public transport and then voted in favour of a peaceful non violent revolution.

After the peoples assembly a car was symbolically smashed up, spray-painted and plants were put inside.

Overall the day was moderately successful informing passers by and providing a fun outing for climate activists but the turn out was fairly small.

  1. “A huge percentage of that is hard worked, low paid, has no prospect of promotion and is treated like shit.”

    Bullshit anon. Supply your proof.

    EXOCET

  2. Drove down K rd twice yesterday and didn’t see it.

    Weird.

Interesting to note the “Say no to carbon trading”. I thought these groups would be for things which artificially limit production, not against.

I wonder what their alternative proposal is?

Also – did they have any form of permission to block off a public road? if not why weren’t they all arrested?

  3. Hmm, maybe there’s certainly another reason why these people want the Patriot Act to be revoked.

  4. not sure if they are amateurs or if they are just patiently moling away in ways even Uncle Trev can’t see on the union front. The Climate stuff seems to have got a lot of new students and young people round them, that they will probably get involved in union activity later on. Several Climaction activistts have already gone out on the Solidarity recruitment drives in South Auckland last month, for example. SW is a small group but seems to divide its limited resources in strategic ways. Their main contenders for the Marxist mantle, the WP, seem to be absorbed in the Unite union, but relations between the two groups may have thawed.

  5. not a goer eh.

what do you base that on?

There is a large workingclass in this country. A huge percentage of that is hard worked, low paid, has no prospect of promotion and is treated like shit.
That trend looks set to continue and grow. There is no decent future for thousands of kiwis alive now and kiwis to come. The trade union movement offers no sort of buffer, it is feeble and compliant. As the commies would say, there is an objective condition for revolution. Thank goodness the local red agitators are too amateuristic to stack the deck right.

  6. I think they’re more dangerous in the climare scam area.

The prole rev is not a goer in NZ

  7. don’t knock it man, at least it keeps SW far away from trying to organise proletarian revolution.
