Chris Hipkins is a former Labour Party Prime Minister of New Zealand and could be again after the next election on November 7.

Like many of his Labour Party colleagues, Chris Hipkins is a former student politician, serving two terms as president of the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association, (VUWSA) in 2000 and 2001.
At that time, most of Hipkins’ fellow VUWSA leaders (including Alistair Shaw, Nick Henry, Catherine Belfield-Haines, James Southgate, Claire Wilson and Desigin Thulkanam were also affiliated with the Maoist-leaning, pro-Communist Party of China – Radical Society Aotearoa (Radsoc) – a spinoff of the former Workers Communist League.
Hipkins cooperated with Radsoc comrades and, on September 25, 1997, was one of 75 students arrested at a Radsoc/Permanent Revolution Group organized, violent student protest on the grounds of Parliament.

Since entering Parliament, Chris Hipkins has continued to interact with several Radsoc, Workers Communist League, and Maoist-connected individuals and organizations, including Living Wage Aotearoa New Zealand…

Not surprisingly, Chris Hipkins has made every effort to increase New Zealand’s ties to the Communist Party of China.
In July 2018, then Minister of Education Chris Hipkins met his counterpart Minister Chen Baosheng in Beijing.
The visit was “aimed at reaffirming New Zealand’s Strategic Education Partnership with China, including the formal education initiatives between the countries as well as New Zealand’s commitment to being a quality and safe destination for Chinese students.”
“In my meeting with Minister Chen Baosheng, I will communicate New Zealand’s high regard for China and our continuing commitment to our education partnership,” Chris Hipkins said.
In June 2023, Prime Minister Hipkins met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang in Beijing, attended the World Economic Forum‘s “Annual Meeting of New Champions” in Tianjin, and launched a “tourism partnership” while visiting business hubs in Shanghai.
New Chinese Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng met with Prime Minister Hipkins on August 16, 2023, during his official visit to New Zealand.
Minister Huai expressed “gratitude for the invitation from the New Zealand side” and stated that this visit is expected to implement the “important consensus reached during the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, and promote pragmatic educational cooperation between China and New Zealand.”
