Those of us above a certain age will recall singer and songwriter Leon Russell. He wrote a song titled This Masquerade, which enjoyed some chart success, and later achieved monster success when recorded by George Benson. That was all back in the 1970’s.
It occurred to this writer that if the lyrics were updated to reflect current events, it might enjoy even wider success – perhaps (shall we say) “going viral” to “pandemic” levels.
So without further adieu, please peruse the “2020 Remix” of the lyrics to This Masquerade – now retitled This Maskquerade:
Are we really happy here
With this Fauci lonely game we play
Looking for hydroxychloroquine words to take sing
Searching but not findingUnderstanding Truthfulness anywhere
We’re lost in a mask maskquerade
Both afraid to say we’re just too far away
Socially distanced from being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words masks got in the way
We’re lost inside this Fauci lonely game we play
Thoughts Rules of lock-downs weeping disappear
Everytime I see BLM signs your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
That we carry on this way
We’re lost in a maskquerade
