My seventh, Where Are You Now Campus Radical? profile is of Carl Gordon.
He was also a bit of a Maoist supporter, a member of the Hamilton “The Paper” Collective. “The Paper” (incorporating HART News) was for a couple of years, the main media outlet for the student Maoist movement that dominated student politics at the time. Others involved in “The Paper” included, Race Relations conciliator and Waikato Labour Studies lecturer, Mike Law,
Carl Gordon, like many Maoist supporters was also active in Halt All Racist Tours. Gordon was from about ’75 to ’77 chairman or secretary of Hamilton HART and in 1976 was on HART’s National Council.
Though mainly Maoist, HART Hamilton was also had a strong pro Soviet element. On the Hamilton executive with Gordon, were three Socialist Unity Party members, Ken and Sonya Perrott and the late Adrienne Hutcheon.
Where is Carl Gordon now? Thirty one years on, Carl Gordon is back at Waikato Students Union, Vice President, once more. Talk about Groundhog Day.
