The Rainbow Conspiracy Part 9: ‘New Virginia Majority’, How Stealth Communists Turned A Red State Blue – With Help From China

Part 8 here.

The communist-led “New Virginia Majority” is part of Steve Phillips’ network. Working with geo-political information supplied by a Communist Chinese University, New Virginia Majority has had a major impact on Virginia elections and by extension, national elections. Should this be a big story?

New Virginia Majority voter registration workers

San Francisco lawyer and leading Democratic Party operative Steve Phillips is working with American communists and socialists to harness “minority” voters behind the Democratic Party. The goal is to forge a “New American Majority” from white “progressives” and minority voters that can never be beaten. If this plan is successful, a far left Democratic Party, controlled by stealth communists like Steve Phillips, will rule America in perpetuity.

If this seems far-fetched to some readers, consider the success Steve Phillips’ friends have had in the Commonwealth of  Virginia.

Once a reliably “red” state, Virginia is now almost completely in the “blue” column.

From Politico, November 2017:

Obama also was the first Democrat to win Virginia in over four decades, and his party hasn’t lost a presidential election there since. But it was Tuesday night’s election in the Old Dominion — where Democrats won the governor’s mansion for a consecutive time and gained a near-record 15 seats in the House of Delegates — that has politicos wondering whether Old Virginny can now officially be considered a blue state.

Virginia is now more Democratic than the nation as a whole, and won’t be considered a tossup in the next presidential election, says Kyle Kondik of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “Does it start as a New Jersey or a Maryland? No,” he says, “but it’s to the left of center now and moving more so to that direction.”

Many commentators have blamed demographics – Northern Virginia houses growing numbers of Washington, DC bureaucrats for instance, but that is only part of the story. Virginia started drifting noticeably to the left in 2008.

Jon Liss, founder New Virginia Majority

In August 2007, veteran Virginia activist Jon Liss founded what was then called Virginia New Majority (now New Virginia Majority) “to patch together a new progressive majority in Virginia.” In 2008, Liss’ organization reached “more than 100,000 homes in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District,” which turned out to be influential in winning the state for Obama.

According to the organization’s website:

New Virginia Majority (NVM)Virginia’s leading civic engagement organization, builds power in working-class communities of color across the Commonwealth. We organize year-round on issues of racial, economic, and environmental justice through mass organizing, political education, intensive leadership development, and strategic communications. We fight for a Virginia that is just, democratic and environmentally sustainable.

Jon Liss is a bona fide communist. Born in Brooklyn, raised in Falls Church and educated at the University of Virginia, Liss has been a radical activist his entire adult life. As a young man, Liss was involved in a number of leftist organizations in Virginia, including: Proceso de Educación Popular, Northern Virginians Against Apartheid, Fairfax County Taxi-drivers Association and in common with many protagonists in this story, Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition.

In the early 1980s, Liss was active in the Progressive Student Network, a front for the Maoist  Revolutionary Workers Headquarters (RWHq). When the “Hq” joined with the Proletarian Unity League to form Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) in 1985, Jon Liss was targeted for recruitment into the new revolutionary coalition.

Freedom Road Socialist Organization internal document 1985

Liss has been a confirmed FRSO member at least since the early 1990s. Before starting New Virginia Majority, Liss served as Executive Director of Tenants and Workers United (TWU). Established in 1986, TWU is the largest member-based, low-income community organization in Northern Virginia.

TWU’s mission “is…to develop multi-racial leadership for social and economic justice, and to democratically control or own community resources including housing, education and health care.”

In 1990, TWU’s budget was $3,000. Today its operating budget is $1.1 million.

Liss also organized the passage of Virginia’s first Living Wage legislation (Alexandria and Arlington), education “reform” including the creation of a bilingual immersion program and formation of the nationally-organized Right to the City Alliance – a Freedom Road Socialist Organization front.

Liss’ greatest revolutionary accomplishment however is his work with New Virginia Majority. Under his guidance, New Virginia Majority helped to flip one of the most conservative states in the union into a reliable Democratic bastion.

Freedom Road Socialist organization and their allies in LeftRoots, Communist Party USA, Democratic Socialists of America and the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism are now working to replicate the Jon Liss/New Virginia model through the South and Southwest.

November 7, 2017 was a great night for Virginia Democrats – for Democrats period. Ralph Northam was elected to become the 73rd Governor of Virginia, Justin Fairfax was elected to become the 41st Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and Mark Herring was reelected as the 47th Attorney General of Virginia.

All had been endorsed by New Virginia Majority.

The Republicans held a 66–34 majority in the House of Delegates before the election and were confident of holding a substantial majority. When the dust had cleared, the GOP was down 15 seats, their majority was now a razor thin 50–49 advantage.

The election sent shockwaves through the GOP. The media crowed about a “blue wave” on the horizon.

Under all the hype, the left community knew who deserved the real credit.

From Airlift:

Virginia Governor-elect Ralph Northam’s victory in the Nov. 2017 VA gubernatorial election is being hailed by the press as “the first forceful rebuke of Trump and his party.” On a night that saw other exciting and improbable wins, the Northam vote was the widest victory in decades for a Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia.

And yet, in the lead-up to the election, the Democrats had no Get out the Vote (GOTV) effort aimed at communities of color and others who would be needed to push the eventual winner, Dem. Ralph Northam, over the finish line. New Virginia Majority stepped into the breach to:

  • Register 30,666 voters in 2017
  • Organize a statewide plan with partners NextGen, Planned Parenthood, SEIU, For Our Future, and Equality Virginia that knocked on 689,000 doors
  • Run $150,000 in ads on African-American radio stations
  • Fight for 12 candidates—11 of whom won in November

In the video below, Jon Liss discusses New Virginia Majority’s role in the 2017 elections with another former Maoist, Bob Wing.

A member of the Editorial Collective of Organizing Upgrade team serves alongside other Collective members Kim Diehl of Freedom Road Socialist organization, Rishi Awatramani (a former lead organizer at New Virginia Majority), Harmony Goldberg, Calvin Cheung-Miaw and Maria Poblet.

Awatramani, Goldberg, Cheung-Miaw and Poblet are all leaders of the Left Inside/Outside Project, the alliance of Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Communist Party USA, Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism, LeftRoots and Democratic Socialists of America, currently working to infiltrate the Democratic Party nationwide.

Note that Liss admits working closely with former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe to restore voting rights to thousands of  Virginia’s convicted felons.

New Virginia Majority did indeed work closely with McAuliffe. They even gave the governor their “Owen W. Hill Freedom Award” for his work on creating tens of thousands of new Democratic Voters with over 200,000 individually signed pardons.

Freedom Road Socialist Organization and LeftRoots leader Claire Tran worked for New Virginia Majority in the 2008 and 2014 election cycles. She has no doubt that New Virginia Majority can take full credit for felon re-enfranchisement in Virginia.

NVM did not ignore the disenfranchisement of people who were formerly incarcerated. Revolutionary thinking is about changing the terrain of struggle. Disenfranchisement of formerly incarcerated people in Virginia, as in many other states, was created with an explicitly racist  intent. They worked on an eight-year fight to give people who had been formerly incarcerated back their right to vote – and they won. NVM showed that they had real power on the ground and advocated for re-enfranchisement and when it passed, they did the work to register people.

The relationship between New Virginia Majority and the Virginia Democratic leadership continues to be close.

Tram Nguyen, Co-Executive Director, New Virginia Majority, was named to Governor Ralph Northam’s Transition Committee on November 15, 2017.

Tram Nguyen, left, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam center, Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax center right, surrounded by New Virginia Majority activists, June 7, 2018

Tram Nguyen also serves on the Advisory Board of the Sandler Phillips Center.

December 2017, two major Democratic donors, the husband-and-wife team of Steve Phillips and Susan Sandler, unveiled a new data and political analysis clearinghouse to help other wealthy Democrats figure out how to get the most bang for the millions of dollars they will plow into next year’s midterm elections.

The Sandler Phillips Center is akin to a “financial advisory” firm for politics, Phillips said, that will dig into voting patterns and demographic data and vet on-the-ground activists to help guide investments of liberal political money to federal and state races where it can make a difference.

Geo-demographic data is essential in modern electioneering and New Virginia Majority is very sophisticated in its use of such data to target and turn-out likely Democrat voters.

Steve McClure is a PhD student in the Geography and GeoInformation Science Department at George Mason University.

Specialties: ArcGIS desktop applications,Social networks, critical theory and urbanism. I am particularly interested in action research driven by the needs of community based organizations whose goal is increasing civic participation

Like Jon Liss, Steve McClure was an ’80s member of the Progressive Student Network. He has also written for the Freedom Road Socialist Organization magazine.

Steve McClure contributed an article to FRSO’s Freedom Road magazine Number 2, Winter 2002: “Genoa:global justice and the end of social peace.”

McClure has been working since 2010, out of the Geography Department of Wuhan University, China –  while supplying sophisticated geo-political data to New Virginia Majority.

According to McClure:

I have been recently working with Virginia New Majority to make a series of maps to inform planning for precinct walks in Virginia State house districts. It is collaborative, involving emails, exchanges of data back and forth, and skype calls. The core data are lists of individual households by pan-ethnic census categories, geocode them. andI use a point density method to aggregate those households visually, and also aggregate the counts of households by precinct and displsy those numbers atop the cluster map.

Steve McClure wrote a blog post, circa 2012, entitled “Actionable Intelligence and Prince William County:”

In the general elections of 2008 Virginia voted democratic for the first time since 1964 with Obama carrying the state. Demographic shifts and increased voter participation rather than a shift in political allegiances account for this outcome. This demographic shift was an artifact of the dynamics of capital accumulation, uneven development and class struggle in a period of neoliberalization, prefiguring zoning and land use patterns.

Focusing on Prince William County, Virginia, I applied spatial interpolation techniques in a GIS to translate the 2008 election returns from the geography of precincts to year 2000 zoning classification areas for further quantitative analysis. The goal was to produce actionable intelligence for working class organizations building popular power at the base.

An article titled: “The Importance of the Fight for the South–and Why It Can and Must be Won” by Bob Wing and Stephen C. McClure appeared in Organizing Upgrade Monday, September 04, 2017.

Electoral action to win political power in the South is a strategic, not an optional, component of any strategy to defeat the right. As regards to elections and political power, we argue:

(1) A critical mass of Southern states can and must be won if we are to block or defeat the right in presidential elections. Three of the five or so critical battleground states are in the South: Florida, Virginia and North Carolina. Southern blue and battleground states plus Washington D.C. hold 38 percent of the electoral votes needed to win.

(2) Winning an anti-rightwing congressional majority depends on winning in the South, as the South has a bigger congressional delegation than any other region and Southern congresspersons also hold key leadership posts within the Republican Party’s congressional hierarchies.

(3) There are tremendous opportunities to build progressive political power and governance at the local level in the South as 105 counties have a Black majority. (Only one county outside of the South has a Black majority.)

While some might dismiss the South, focusing strategically on the Northeast and Pacific Coast as central to a progressive program and the Midwest as the main political battleground, the South’s dynamic growth, historical legacy of Black struggle and powerful political weight make it a critical battlefield.

The nuance is that the South cannot be won as a bloc, but only state by state and county by county. In fact, winning the South in large part means understanding that it is not a monolithic entity and winning it piece by piece: i.e. politically deconstructing the South.

The Chinese government is almost certainly aware of what Steve McClure is up to. Every foreign resident in China is closely monitored by the Communist Party authorities. He is certainly well-accepted by his Chinese colleagues.

From the Wuhan University website:

Steve McClure with Chinese students, Wuhan University

As an English consultant of LIESMARS (Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying Mapping Remote Sensing) in Wuhan University, for many graduate students who are suffering from anxiety and desperation stemming from the arduous struggle for their master degrees or PhDs, Steve is a lifesaver. Whether it is to get their papers published in academic journals or simply to pluck up their courage in international conferences, he teaches them everything….

As an expert in GIS himself, Steve is surprisingly modest…. Steve has earned a stellar reputation, as well as a seat in the front row with some of the most renowned professors in the field.

Consider this: An American Marxist works out of a Chinese University for eight years, supplying information to a communist-run voter registration operation in Virginia with the clear intention of influencing elections not just in Virginia, but across the entire US South.

Is this legal? Is Beijing in any way sanctioning or even assisting this operation to influence US elections in favor of the Democrats? Most of the communist groups working in the alliance to ensure Democratic Party victories such as Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Communist Party USA and Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism are pro-China. It is almost impossible to believe that Beijing is not involved in this program.

Roughly 2,500,000 Virginia voters cast ballots in the “Old Dominion’s” November 2017 elections. Given that New Virginia Majority helped to get 200,000 felons voting, signed-up at least 160,000 minority voters and was part of a huge GOTV effort, isn’t it reasonable to give Jon Liss’ team major credit for the Democrats excellent showing?

Communist-led New Virginia Majority is part of the Steve Phillips network. Working with geo-political information supplied from a Communist Chinese University, New Virginia Majority has had a major impact on Virginia elections and by extension, national elections. Should this be a big story?

Look for Part 10 coming soon: “How Steve Phillips, And His Allies Won The 2017 Alabama US Senate Race ”

A book entitled “The Rainbow Conspiracy” will be released in October 2018.
