In 2013, Donald Trump actually met with illegal immigrant activists. According to Fox News Latino, Trump was swayed by their stories, saying “You’ve convinced me.”

But that was then.

While there is quite a bit of discussion on a “wall,” which Trump uses as an “applause line,” it is much more difficult to pin down a strategy on how to deal with the illegal immigrants already in the country.

Trump uses the “build a wall” phrase when he wants applause. He told the New York Times:

Mr. Trump talked about the art of applause lines. “You know,” he said of his events, “if it gets a little boring, if I see people starting to sort of, maybe thinking about leaving, I can sort of tell the audience, I just say, ‘We will build the wall!’ and they go nuts.”

A “gotcha” question often used by the “open borders” crowd is whether America should “round up” and deport illegal immigrants. The question is dishonest, however, because it assumes that either “rounding them up” or giving illegal immigrants full amnesty are the only two solutions.

Illegal immigration would be drastically reduced NOW, before a “wall” is built, if the following steps are taken:

  1. Laws were enforced that punish employers for hiring illegal immigrants (for slave wages).
  2. Taxpayer money would stop be used to support illegal immigrants.
  3. When law enforcement encounters illegal immigrants, they should be empowered to follow the law and start deportation proceedings.

The only “path to citizenship” should be the naturalization process.

An informal poll by Trevor Loudon on Twitter makes it clear that the majority of people want illegal immigrants to be deported:

Donald Trump did not give specifics, but said last week that “having children in this country does not relieve individuals of the burden of violating the sanctity and sovereignty of this nation.” He continued, vaguely:

“There are consequences, and none of those consequences include exclusion from enforcement of the laws of this land.”

As reported at Fox News Latino, Ted Cruz said that illegal immigrants should be deported.

“Yes, we should deport them,” Cruz told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. “We should build a wall, we should triple the Border Patrol. Federal law requires that anyone here illegally that’s apprehended should be deported.”

He said that’s why Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, was created in the first place.

“We have law enforcement that looks for people who are violating the laws, that apprehends them and deports them.”

Additionally, Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said:

“Cruz has been very clear: people who are here illegally should be deported. That is the law today. Period. They broke the law, they face the consequence. ICE exists for that purpose and they should continue to do their job. And on top of that any law enforcement that encounters those here illegally should follow the law and deport them.”

Trump balked at Cruz’s position, taking to Twitter to blatantly lie say that Cruz “is in favor of amnesty and weak on illegal immigration.” Donald Trump seems to think Americans are too stupid to do their own research on Ted Cruz’s consistent position on Amnesty.
