Communists to Back Obama and Democrats in 2012

The Communist Party USA, while on occasion working to build third party efforts, has since the 1930s, consistently supported and infiltrated the Democratic Party.

In a column in today’s Peoples World, Communist Party national Secretary Sam Webb, lays out the reasons why his Party, despite some “disappointments,” will continue to support their “friend” Barack Obama and the Democrats in 2012.

But the main question from a strategic point of view is this: Does it make any difference, from the standpoint of the class and democratic struggles, which party gains political ascendency?

Some – though not the labor movement nor other mass organizations of the American people – say no, it doesn’t.

Some even go a step further and say a Democratic victory creates popular illusions, which in turn weaken the people’s struggles. And the only way out of this vise is to form a third party now.

Communists don’t agree with either one of these views. In our view, the differences between the two parties of capitalism are of consequence to class and democratic struggles.

Neither party is anti-capitalist, but they aren’t identical either. Differences exist at the levels of policy and social composition. And despite the many frustrations of the past two years, the election of Barack Obama was historic and gave space to struggle for a people’s agenda.

If, on the other hand, the Republicans had been victorious in 2008 the character of class and democratic struggles would have unfolded very differently. Our movement would have been on the defensive from Day One, the Democrats would be running for cover, and the Republicans would have an unfettered hand in their efforts to liquidate the welfare state, roll back the rights revolution of the 1930s and 1960s, and crush the people’s movement – labor in the first place.

As for the wisdom of a third party, we have always advocated the formation of an independent people’s party at the core of which are the working class and labor, racially and nationally oppressed people, women, youth, immigrants, seniors, gay and straight, etc. It is essential for any deep-going social change. But its realization depends on more than our desire, more than our political-ideological attitude. Millions who have to be at the core of this party still operate under the umbrella of the Democratic Party, albeit increasingly in an independent fashion.

Moreover, to separate ourselves at this moment from these forces would be contrary to our strategic policy of building maximum unity against right-wing extremism now and in next year’s elections.

Now that doesn’t mean that we give up our advocacy of an independent people’s party, but we also understand that its formation is dictated by concrete political realities and strategic necessities. Nor does it mean that we hit the mute button when the Obama administration takes positions that we don’t agree with. Just as we show no hesitation in supporting, and fighting for, the administration’s progressive initiatives, we should have no compunction about taking issue with the administration when it takes positions that we don’t agree on.

Which is what we have done.

When someone says we are not critical of the administration what they usually mean is that our criticism isn’t as sweeping and categorical as they would like.

We make criticisms, but we do it in a certain context and with a certain strategic objective in mind. We are keenly aware of the fact that the agenda of the far right is to bring this administration and country to its knees, with a heavy dose of racism, lies and economic sabotage, setting the stage for a full blown return to power of the most reactionary, racist, anti-labor, anti-women, homophobic and militarist grouping in U.S. politics.

We want no part of that. We don’t have any illusions about the Democratic Party, but we don’t have any illusions about the Republican Party either.

Furthermore, we are also aware of the undeniable fact that no other party besides the Democratic Party stands a chance of beating the GOP next year.

US voters should not discount the influence of the Communist Party USA. The Party has influence in many labor unions, religious groups and mass organizations. This gives the Party the ability to tip the balance in close elections at both State and Federal levels.

It also has ties to many leading Democratic Party legislators including Bernie Sanders, Maxine Waters, Danny Davis, Barbara Lee, John Conyers, Dennis Kucinich and Rosa DeLauro, not to mention the President himself.

Through these contacts, the Communist Party is able to influence Democratic Party policy in a multitude of areas.

If you want to know what the Democrats will do tomorrow, look at what the Communists are advocating today…!

  1. Read the post to which Trevor points and see if you still feel that the Communist Party is actually supporting Obama because of their agreement with his policies, or if the party is supporting him because of their distrust of the right wing.

    1. To LI Reader; it’s BOTH their support for Obama’s policies and their “distrust” of the “right wing”. Let us remember; whether it’s a left wing or a right wing, both wings operate on the same bird. AND let us remember, it’s what people DO, not what they SAY that is important. The acronym USSR stood for Union of Soviet (soviet means rule by committee) SOCIALIST Republics. The Kremlin didn’t call themselves Communists. They called themselves Socialists. These are 2 wings on the same bird. The Berlin wall didn’t “fall”. The powers that be had long planned that 1990 would be the correct time for the Kremlin to say, “Oops; forget all the killing we did over the last 80 years. It was a big mistake. The West was right all along and we have seen the error of our ways.” That is what lamestream media “reported” and that is what the sheep believe. Any thinking person wouldn’t have bought it then and doesn’t buy it now. I’m not a fan of any thing on the Left or the Right. I’m a fan of EXTREMELY LIMITED government–meaning the government doesn’t belong in any “social” activities whatsoever–the government that is big enought to “give” you everything is big enought to take everything from you as well.

  2. Matt,

Of course, the Democrats will try to rig the next election. They try to rig EVERY election. In order to win, the Republicans have to get a majority that is beyond the margin of fraud. The Democrats just have to get a majority, by fraud or otherwise.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if it eventually came to light that the 2008 election had been rigged – and I specifically mean the congressional and senatorial elections that let Obama do the evil that he had long planned to do.

Don’t forget that Obama, though he claims to have been born in Hawaii (I won’t get into whether that is true, though I have my doubts), he has his political roots in Chicago, which is far and away the most corrupt body politic in the US.

You must watch the DVD ‘AGENDA’ ‘Grinding America Down’ by Curtis Bowers. Trevor Loudon has much to offer in this DVD. Price is $18.00 plus $3.00 shipping. See the charts that are in the DVD and you will be surprised as to how long we have been under attack and how much ground we have lost.

    Shalom

  4. As always, thanks for bringing stuff like this to the forefront, Trevor.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, but I have a hunch that Obama-loving cronies and their allies are going to do everything in their power to rig next year’s elections—if they find they are unable to sway voters. In any case, considering that more and more Americans are waking up (though probably nowhere near enough, sadly) and realizing the true meaning of “change”, the left can, and will, do anything to stay in control.

Look at this, the commies actually admitting they’ve got some of their own in the Dems’ ranks. Let that alone be a reason to fight back.

    1. Agree with you allan; the more I have in my life studied and warned of these groups, the more I understand the saying of the watchmen being without honor in his own country…for most do not listen until it is nearly too late.
